Abandoned Projects

Sometimes, things just don't work out. Rather than hiding my shame forever, I've decided to put up some of my failed projects for others to see so they do not repeat my mistakes. Some of these have WIP versions you can download.

Arctic Assault

2010

Arctic Assault MAP01 - Shoreline

Arctic Assault was a very ambitious project that didn’t go anywhere for a variety of reasons. I didn’t have the time, I didn’t have the dedication, and I had no idea what I was doing. It was a collaboration with a friend, who (no offense if you’re reading this) knew even less.

I don’t remember many details, but it was intended to be somewhere between Operation Arctic Wolf and Call of Duty. The premise is that you’re an American commando dropped into Russia during the 1970s, and there’s something about a rogue general trying to launch missiles that you have to stop. It would have been full of cutscenes and scripted events, with all new weapons and enemies.

All that was ever finished was the (terrible) intro sequence and two partially complete maps. I think this was some time in 2010, and I’m not sure how long I drew out this project before finally giving up entirely.

Derpmod

Late 2012

Derpmod MAP01 - Base

Derpmod was a joke mod that I worked on periodically for a few months in the latter half of 2012. I still had no idea what I was doing, but I learned quite a bit in the process of making it.

The concept was to make a deliberately bad mod with a variety of different parody maps that could be played in any order. There would be plenty of references and memes mixed in. For example, the final boss was to be a trollface Terry Trap and one of the levels was called Skyrim.

This time I actually made a bit of progress, probably about a third to halfway finished. Other projects (such as the original Ascension) took precedence, and I gradually stopped working on it. Still, Stoner Doom is conceptually similar in some ways, as is Odyssey of Suck, and parts of Derpmod may have ended up recycled into both.

Ascension Revolution

2013-2014

Revolution overworld

Ascension Revolution was my main project for over a year. It was a sequel/spinoff of Ascension, my text RPG game, taking place in the same world but able to stand on its own. Both technically and philosophically, it was never a Doom mod but a game built on the GZDoom engine. It was to be an FPS/RPG hybrid somewhere between Daggerfall and Strife, with a heavy focus on dialogue and story and a moderate degree of openness. It was to mix old-school and modern gameplay elements with a late-1990s aesthetic.

Revolution was to take place in Egaloch, a small country on the planet Rynn. It is a mixed fantasy/sci-fi setting- literally. Several years prior, Terrans made first contact with the planet and opened it up to the galaxy. As a bit of twist, you play the bad guy- the evil warlord thrown in jail years prior and broken out at the beginning of the game. However, times are changing, and nothing is as clear cut as it used to be.

The main reason I abandoned Revolution is because it simply was not working out. I didn't have the resources to make what I really wanted to make, and I started to run out of time and motivation as well. The gap between what I wanted to create and what I was actually creating just kept getting wider and wider. I had a vision of an engrossing RPG experience with a late 1990s feel, but what I ended up with was a mess of crappy sprites and bad coding.

One Sentence Maps

2015

Hotel lobby

Late in the summer of 2015, I asked the ZDoom community to give me one sentence map ideas. I could have used a random generator, but I wanted crazy, interesting ideas from real people. I figured it would be a good way to pick up some quick projects and improve my mapping skills. I made a few, then the summer ended and I didn't have time to make maps anymore. Still, it's something I'd like to get back to if I have the time.

I finished two maps and started one more. The prompts for the two maps that were finished were:
